Dalmatia is located along the coast of the Croatian Adriatic Coast and is generally divided into 3 parts. Zadar is the capital of Northern Dalmatia, the Central region is famous for its ancient Roman city of Split and the Southern region is oriented towards Dubrovnik and all the way to the Montenegrin Border. Although there are many exaggerations about Dalmatia, some facts are widely accepted: This is the most sport orientated region in the world, the sea is clean, beaches are fantastic, and the wine and cuisine are delicious. NATIONAL PARKS The beauty of Croatian nature is widely known and some of the most splendid landscapes can be found in Dalmatia. Waterfalls in the Krka Nationa Park, magnificent islands, and islets in KornatiNP, highland landscapes in Paklenica and Mljet NP. There are several nature parks in Dalmatia. DALMATIAN CUISINE The healthiest and liveliest cuisine in Croatia. Dalmatian food and wine have a special status among the Croatians. Make sure you explore it and you will be delighted. Dalmatian cuisine has not changed for centuries. Core ingredients are olive oil, wine and everything from the sea. The Dalmatian cuisine is simple, without any complications, not open to mish-mashes and fusions, this makes it unique and even stubborn..like some traditional people of this region!
DALMATIAN SPECIALITIES 1.Pag cheese and dry-cured ham. Pag sheep cheese is the best known Croatian cheese and with the Dalmatian dry-cured ham it is often served for starters.
2. Vis Pogača Bread and Soparnik Try pogača bread from Vis with a fish filling, either as a main course or a quick bite, while Soparnik from the Gata/ Omiš area is the pogača filled with Swiss Chard, (similar to English spinach,) olive oil and garlic.
3. Gregada and Pašticada Gregada, a fisherman’s dish from Island Hvar, can be described as a soup and the main course all in one. It is prepared with high-quality whitefish, potatoes, onion garlic, white wine, and olive oil. Pašticada is a marinated beef dish. The beef is stuffed with ham, garlic and cloves, marinated in red wine, garlic, with vegetables, simmered slowly in its own juices and later served as a rich sauce with homemade gnocchi.
4. Plavac Mali or Pošip? That is the question! The answer depends on your preferences for red or white wine. Many of the best wines come from Dalmatia.
5. Fritule or Rožata – Fritule appear as small doughnuts and have a distinct taste thanks to raisins and a splash of rakija (grappa) in the dough.
