If you’ve been dreaming about visiting an idyllic island paradise, steeped in history, romantic ambiance, offering delicious traditional cuisine and superb local wines, then look no further! Hvar is often listed as one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the Mediterranean, with many things to offer: lavender, sunshine, extra virgin olive oil, superb wines, honey, essential herbal oils, wellness getaways and much more.
Our adventure begins at 900am. We will escort you by fast catamaran from Split Harbour to Hvar Town, a 1-hour transfer. From here we’ll explore the Old Town on a guided walk, learning a little about the cultural history and hearing some intriguing stories from the past..taking time to breathe in the perfumes of clean sea air and the surrounding herbal vegetation.
A visit to the Fortica fortress above the Old Town is a must! Built in the 16th century to shelter the local population from the invading Turks in 1571. it was badly damaged in 1579 by a massive explosion in the gunpowder depot, and was restored during the rule of the French and Austrians and today there is a wonderful collection of ancient amphora found in the sea, and various classical and Medieval items on show. From the Fortica the view out over the town below, and Pakleni islands beyond is spectacular.
From the Fortica we’ll take a drive across the island, to the villages of Vrboska, Jelsa and Pitve, crossing the highest scenic points where the dry stone walls are still in place after centuries of withstanding the winds, sea air, heat and rain, a legacy to the hard-working men and women of the past.
Driving towards Vrboska, we’ll see the famous Plains of Stari Grad protected by UNESCO. This is the most fertile plain on all of the Dalmatia Islands, spreading 6 kilometres between Stai Grad and Vrboska. The fantastic land system was set up by the Ancient Greeks over 2000 years ago, dividing family land parcels by dry stone walls.. The plain has always been used for agriculture, mainly for vineyards, olives, figs, almonds, and carob. There are 120 archaeological sites on the plain dating from the Prehistorical times and up to the Middle Ages.In Jelsa! Jelsa is a perfect holiday destination for families who like to explore, swim, enjoy local and delicious cuisine washed down with superb local vintages..and probably the best gelato in the whole wide world can be found in the main piazza town square!!! Enjoying a glass of Andro Tomic’s wine in Jelsa, Island Hvar[/caption
In Vrboska! This is really a very picturesque little village built along a long cove resembling a fiord that ends in a canal with many small bridges resembling a little Venice. The old stone houses of Vrboska are especially beautiful, transporting the visitor back a few hundred years. We’ll take a walk through the village, before heading towards Pitve.
In Pitve! A late, slow lunch will be served in the nearby village of Pitve. The drive through the vineyards to this quaintest village through the vineyards is so picturesque and something memories are made of. A traditional lunch of Dalmatian speciality starters; slowly roasted meats or octopussy with roast potatoes and vegetables under the peka iron bell; salads, soups and dessert will test your taste buds ..served with magnificent views back to the coastal mainland and warmest hospitality.
Our lunch will be served here in hills of Pitve, a perfect spot to enjoy a lazy afternoon with some delicious traditional Dalmatian cuisine washed down with a glass or two….!
