Twelve days in Croatia
April 2, 2019Trogir Treasures Tour
May 28, 2019A Delightful Day on Island Brač.
9.00 am We’ll start the day with a 50 min ferry ride from Split to Supetar on the island of Brač. This is the island made famous by white limestone, the island?s trademark, superb extra virgin olive oil, wines, seafood, and friendly people. The lamb of Brač is also considered a specialty due to the salty grasses and herbs the animals graze on.
From Supetar, we’ll take a 20-minute drive inland to the rustic village of Škrip, the oldest village on the island and one of the most popular. Here we’ll take a wander through this ancient village and visit an old stone olive oil pressing mill, the Museum of Olive Oil. Tasting the oils, some infused with natural herbs and fruits, homemade jams, local cheeses, pate, figs, and freshly baked bread. We’ll enjoy these delicacies with a glass of local wine while learning a little about olive oil production and the traditions of the people. Always a highlight with so many visitors to Island Brač.
From here we’ll make our way to the town of Nere?i??a. As far back as the 11th century, this was the economic and religious centre of the island. Located inland and far enough away from the shores and marauding pirates! The most popular icon of this village is the church of St Peter and St Paul, with a small pine tree growing out of its apse! The church houses a valuable relief by the local sculptor Nikola Lozanica.
Wandering through this magical little village takes you back to another era when everything was made from stone. We?ll continue on through the heartland of the island to the highest point called Vidova Gora. From here the views over the coastline are stunning, with islands Hvar, Vis, and Korčula stretching out below in the shimmering blue Adriatic. On a clear day, the Italian coastline is visible!
From the heights of Vidova Gora, we?ll descend down to an abandoned shepherd’s village where we’ll have a delicious Dalmatian 3-course lunch in an abandoned village including Brač lamb, slowly roasted under the peka iron bell.
Following lunch we?ll head back to Supetar, visiting the Gallery of Dra?en Jaksi?, one of Croatia?s most famous and prolific stonemasonry sculptors, in his village of Donji Humac. From here a short 7 km drive will return us to our ferry, arriving back to Split at 19.00.
